Service
- Silver Level Experience -
During the Fall of 2016 I participated in service work in inner city Baltimore. I was a volunteer English tutor at The Esperanza Center, an organization that is involved with caring for the needs of the people in the community. During my first few experiences, I was nervous, but over time I became more comfortable engaging in discussion with the students. The most memorable part was being able to relate with students and bond over similar dreams and aspirations.

Program Wide Learning objective met: Perspectivism
I got to put my feet in other people’s shoes every week and hear about what they experienced. This helps me have a more holistic view on the basic needs of everyone in society.
Service Core Learning Objectives
Community Engagement: Participate in community action, including campus
community, neighborhood/city/state community, national community, global
community, and others.
Directly involved with a community in my area
Civic Agency: Regard themselves as connected to communities and social groups, and
as able to proactively interact with them. Seek ways to make positive change.
Fulfilling a call to volunteer and help others around me
Capacity for Reflection: Consider role as social actor, impact on community, and effect of community involvement on self. Seek to strengthen and multiply skills for sustainable social solutions.
Hearing other people’s stories about life and learning from them.
One Wednesday evening, I tutored a college-aged student and got to learn about his journey to the U.S. to make a life and help his family in Central America. He was able to receive some assistance from a family member in the Baltimore area and he used the English tutoring as a way to get acclimated to a new environment. His determination to go to school and advance in life was inspiring. His story encouraged me to make the most my opportunities and maximize my potential.
